A large NORTHWEST Shovel is loading a fleet of AC MACK Dump Trucks from the cut. A CATERPILLAR D-8 is working just above the shovel to the left. A large air compressor sets on the left, while laborers are using picks to hand work the slope to the left. Two AC Mack dumps are in the foreground, while two others return from the fill in the background. In the distance, wooden falsework for a large bridge can be seen. The ARROYO SECO PARKWAY as it was originally called, was the first freeway in the west. The original section opened in 1940. It was the first modern Urban freeway ever built in the U.S. It runs from Los Angeles to Pasadena, and is now called the Pasadena Freeway or SR-110. Because of its engineering feat, it was designated as a historic engineering landmark by the ASCE in 1999. The parkway/freeway followed the original route of the 9 mile dedicated cycleway built in 1897 to connect Pasadena to Los Angeles, following the stream bed of the Arroyo Seco. The original portion of the Pasadena Freeway is considered by today’s standard to be obsolete and rather dangerous. I got this amazing photo and the information from a friend in Michigan about 1990. I believe the information is correct, but can not guarantee it.
