The Saxonys are an Endangered rare Heritage breed, on ALBC's Critical list (Very Endangered), make a very large table duck, & will lay 220 to 240, 40-48 oz.-to the-dozen (HUGE) eggs per year. Duck eggs are usable for anything you would do with a chicken egg, but are easier to peel, due to the thicker membrane under the shell, & they have a larger percentage of yolk. Please see either or The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy threatened Breeds list, at www.albc-usa.org/wtchlist.html Saxonys are one of the best dual purpose breeds, for meat & eggs. They lay 200 TO 240 HUGE eggs, 40 to 46 oz. to the dozen, per year, and make a large table duck, as well. They are calm, friendly, & forage well. They will cheerfully eat as many Bugs from your garden, orchard, & yard as possible. And both the hens and the drakes are beautiful!!! The hens are buff to light cinnamon, with cream facial stripes. The drakes are mallard-pattern, but blued & creamier, with Silver-colored heads. I don't have a good photo of my drake right now, he is currently shed out, but he does normally have the beautiful Silver head (they call it Blue, but it actually is a Sterling Silver color) that a good Saxony drake should have-very pretty! You will derive enless cheep amusement, if you set up a Kiddie pool, with a hose... I save the feathers for stuffing comforters & pillows, they are so soft, & warm, & fluffy!
