These just about provide clearance for inserting a 1/2" thick panel if the flat rib of the bracket was screwed against a flat surface. The material would have to be a fraction thicker than 1/2" in order for the bracket to hold the panels tightly. Should be handy for attaching Styrofoam or Polyisocyanate panels, plywood, etc. I'm not sure exactly what kind of steel these are, but they ring nicely when you drop them on a concrete floor.
