PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION:
During the seventeen years since this book was first published vast changes have been made in electrical - machine design, construction and applications. Even though a large part of its text is fundamental and does not change, a revised edition was justified to bring the treatment into accord with present-day practice and to add new material.
Megohm meters have come into wide general use for measuring insulation resistance of electrical circuits and equipment. Material on their construction and use has been added to the chapter on Methods of Measuring Resistance. Modern direct - current machines are for the most part of the interpole type. These machines require accurate setting of the brushes on the neutral of their commutators; therefore a chapter on methods of doing this work has been included. The chapter on three - wire circuits and generators has been rewritten and simplified.
The chapters on transformers, alternating-current motors and starting alternating-current motors have been completely rewritten and extended with new material.
Electron tubes and mercury-arc rectifiers have come into very extensive use in industrial and power plants. A completely new chapter deals with their operation and applications. In all, about 100 pages of new material is included in this revision, which has considerably broadened the subject matter.
Compiled largely from an Electrical Study Course previousiy published in Power for practical power-plant operators and electricians, the first edition was an experiment. Many thousands of copies of that edition have been sold and it has been translated into Spanish. The author takes this opportunity to thank the many readers who have contributed toward making the book so successful. He trusts that the new edition will prove as useful to those striving to gain more knowledge of electrical fundamentals and their application to electrical equipment. - F.A. ANNETT, NEW YORK, N. Y., October, 1938.

NOTE ABOUT DESCRIPTIONSEvery effort is made to give a full and accurate picture of the condition of each book. There is an overall assessment of condition ("Like New", "Very Good", "Good+", "Good"", etc.), followed by a description of the dust jacket, where one is present, then all blemishes are recorded. The grade of condition accorded to any book is, of course, a matter of the appraiser's opinion, but "Like New", for instance, can be taken to mean that the book looks virtually as it did when first published. "Very Good" is a notch down from "Like New" and usually denotes that the book has been read by one careful owner over the age of fifty-five. "Good+" denotes that the book has been read by several careful persons of similar maturity. "Good" means what it says, volume is evenly worn and in tact. "FAIR" means not very good, "Poor" means that, except for antiquity and/or subject matter, the volume is suitable for a fireplace.
