Optional: DIY removal of protective housing: This assembly was designed specifically as a SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) status indicator for firefighters. It had to be rugged and waterproof. And it had to be bright so firefighters could watch each other's air supply in smoke filled rooms. You may not need the large clear epoxy shell. Removing the shell will leave the wired LED intact in the metal bushing. Check the before & after pictures below. We removed the shell by carefully making hacksaw cuts on both sides and then prying the halves apart. The LED is recessed and can be avoided by keeping the cut on top shallow. Do NOT try to dissolve the shell with strong solvents. Solvents may dissolve the LED too. We do not recommend removing the 5mm LED from the metal bushing.
