This is the coil for the improved Mystery Plus Crystal Set At the end of this item description, I have included a copy of the original article from the Brisbane, Australia newspaper article that describes the radio in detail. Don't be fooled by coils that claim to be the Mystery Plus Crystal Set radio coil but have too many turns or the wrong gauge wire! We carefully researched this coil and have reproduced it exactly as closely as possible as described in the original article. Here is where we located the information we used to produce our coil: "Construction details of this crystal set were first published in Our Wireless Circle section of The Sunday Mail newspaper in Brisbane on July 3rd 1932. It proved to be very popular with the readers and a second construction article was published on July 17th 1932 along with readers letters and questions, and another on April 16th 1933." If you don't know what the Mystery Crystal Radio is, you probably do not need this coil. It is a very specialized coil that is very unlikely to work with other types of crystal radios. This coil is wound on a core that is approximately 3" long by 3.25" in diameter. It starts with 24AWG magnet wire that is anchored in two small holes and wound for 10 turns. Then, two more anchor holes are drilled and 30AWG wire is anchored in them. It then continues for 25 more turns with the 30AWG wire added along with the 24AWG wire. At the end of these 25 turns, the 30AWG wire is anchored in two more holes and the 24AWG wire continues for another 11 turns. This way the 24AWG wire has a total of 46 turns with 25 turns of 30AWG wire interleaved with the middle 25 turns of 24 gauge wire. On top of these windings is a separate winding for the antenna. This winding is 15 turns of 24AWG wire. All of the ends of the wires are coiled inside the core. We have provided a minimum of 12" of wire ends to allow the coil to be mounted in the best possible position. Core material: PVC thin wall pipe Length of core: approximately 3" (76mm) Turns of main coil: 24AWG = 46, 30AWG = 25 Turns of antenna coil: 24AWG = 15 Also, we have many different air variable caps available and we are adding new ones all of the time. If you require a special air variable cap to use with the tuning coil for your radio, contact us and if we do not have it in stock, we can most likely find one for you! We will wind almost any coil for you. We also have many different gauges and types of magnet wire, cloth covered wire, and silk covered wire and we will wind tapped windings, too! If you have a special coil you would like wound for you, please ask. We can wind almost any coil in any amount you need. Special orders require a minimum of 7 days lead time to wind the coils.
