Dave Gingery writes in the foreward-
"When I first saw the Goodman/Holmes forge I was impressed with its appearance. When it was fired and I saw it perform I was persuaded that it was a practical project for a how-to manual and I urged Bill and Bob to go for it. Fortunately notes and drawings had been kept so this book is their response.
If you are working with metal you will eventually want to raise it to high temperatures to change its state, its shape or its degree of hardness. This piece of equipment will enable you to do it.
There are several unique features of this amazing piece of shop equipment. The most outstanding feature is the high output atmospheric burner. (That means no blower needed guys!) The cleverness of arranging twin flames that impinge on each other results in a single concentrated flame that raises temperature rapidly. But radial holes that admit the extra primary air, thus eliminating the need for a blower, are the master stroke..."
Unka Dave is right. This is a great forge/oven/furnace. Sure, with luck I can heat chunks of iron hot enough in my charcoal barbecue grill to hammer them into shape on an anvil. But when it comes to wanting to precisely heat treat a tap or other tool, this is the device you and I need. Besides my ole BBQ takes an hour and a half to get any heat goin'.
One of these will come in mighty handy in the shop or out on the ranch or for a traveling farrier when there's no electricity out by the paddock where he wants to set up to shoe them horses, or you're a'fixen to have a beach party and do some serious roast'en of them possums yer demented cousin keeps bring'en up to the porch.
Bladesmiths love it because it's so fast to get up to temp and it will stay at temp which is easily controlled. It starts up quick, it shuts off quick. No fuss no muss. You can melt metal in it too! For just about any application where you need to get metal hot this Atmospheric Forge/Furnace/Oven will come in mighty handy - yessiree!
This forge can get to 2500F in less than 3 minutes from a dead cold start! And it's quiet! No blower. No electricity. This sucker can melt a beer bottle down to a puddle in 25 seconds! So now you can make your mother-in-law that brown glass eye you've been promising her! Cast your own telescope lens. Melt some metal. Heat treat some cutters. Anneal some steel. Make a knife. Shoe a horse. Git goin' on them possum. If you need to get something hot this forge can do it, quickly and quietly.
This is published by Gingery so you can expect to see the usual Gingery quality: drawings, parts lists, how-to, even details on the pyrometer. This is a most unusual furnace, operating with no electricity, because you don't need a blower but it's a gas fired unit, so you can use LP gas or propane, or maybe the methane seeping out of your septic tank. Well... maybe not.
Excellent project! Heating, working, annealing or heat treating steel is an essential part of metal working. This will give you the precise control you need. Get a copy!
