Agilent vto-8200 microwave 2..3GHZ vto vco oscillator
Agilent VTO-8200 Microwave 2..3GHz VTO VCO Oscillator
Build a DC-1GHz Sweeper! - Includes TO8 Mounting Kit
Wideband professional VCOs are hard to find. Most commercial SHF applications (mobile phones, etc) only need narrow-band oscillators which are easier to make, and a lot cheaper to obtain. By contrast, these parts have an exceptionally wide range, and will sweep a full 1 GHz from 2GHz to 3GHz (and a bit beyond), but are usually priced out of reach of mere mortals.
Although you might not be interested in the SHF bands, the magic comes when you mix the outputs from two oscillators and filter to obtain the difference frequency ... the 2..3GHz range mixed with 2GHz (or 3GHz) gives a DC-1GHz signal which is great for building a spectrum analyser or general coverage receiver. The RF/LO are at least 1GHz higher than the output, so LP filtering is easy. (The second oscillator in this configuration is usually fixed, so a cheap 2GHz modile phone VCO would be suitable). For mixing, an RMS-30 from Minicircuits would be a good choice.
Most designs I've seen use the Minicircuits ROS/POS/JTOS series VCOs because although expensive they can at least be obtained. Examples of this are the Spectrum Analyser in Circuit Cellar magazine, or the VNA online at http:// /psoc2002/winners/3.htm. Even so, only the MCL ROS-2160W can match the 1GHz sweep of these VTO-8200s.
Alternatively these could be used to build a sweeper or LO for the 2.4GHz band, or through one doubler for the 5.7GHz band, and another for 10GHz work.
The VCOs on offer here are professional parts in a TO8 can with 4 leads; Vtune, Vsupply, RF out and Ground.
Base and leads are gold plated. Output is a healthy +10dBm into 50 ohms, great for driving mixers.
For full specs, see the datasheet and figures below.

As usual, the photo is of one of my spares - the winner(s) will receive theirs in original factory packaging.
Local source unknown. Being professional parts, these are normally very expensive. Barend H in Holland lists the lower frequency brother, the VTO-8090 at 81.23 Euros, that's $135 AU each!!. Available here at a more reasonable BIN price ...

[My original plan was to list on both UK and Australian sites, but will now focus on the Australian site. Folks in the UK have never once bought from one of my UK site listings, though they have bought from Australian site listings so the extra fees do not seem to be worthwhile.]
* All information contained in the listing is correct to the best of my knowledge - but that doesn't make it true. I can't always amend active listings but will always try to incorporate corrections in future listings. If a part isn't exactly what you were expecting or are prepared to accept then just let me know and we'll sort it out.
* Unless specified, all photographs are taken by myself of the actual parts on offer, or those from the same box/batch.
* As a small private seller I'm not registered for GST or VAT, so no extra taxes to add.
* Often I will use recycled packaging to reduce cost, while ensuring robust transport. I always appreciate suggestions for improvements and prompt notification of any problems in this area.
