Use the radio as a chock block, go swimming with it, run over it, or damage it through negligence and you are on your own.
This radio and equipment will allow your organization or group to have inexpensive, reliable communications for your operations. This radio equipment is ideal for the following organizations:
4. Rural Law Enforcement agencies
7. Regular Fire and Rescue Agencies
12. Multi-Team Large Events such as Paintball, Hunting, Sporting events, Etc.
13. Emergency or Disaster Radio Caches
14. Volunteer Public Safety Operations in Rural Areas
16. Small County Public Works Agencies
17. Reserve Police Communications
18. Additional Spare radios for public safety departments
21. Boy Scout / Girl Scout Troop Activities
All the radios mentioned above are the Wideband Operational models. The Wideband / Narrowband issues that are going around right now are regarding the FCCs requirement that public safety agencies have to move from the current Wideband functions to a Narrowband function. The problem is that new radios to meet the Narrowband requirements are twice as expensive as the current radios used by most commercial radio clients.
The FCC mandated that this changeover is to take place by January 2013. Many local government entities and state government entities cannot afford this changeover for radio equipment right now, and many rural areas cannot afford them at all with the Economic Recession that has gripped the nation over this last year. It has been rumored that because of the shortage of tax dollars coming in that the actual conversion date may be pushed back to January 2020.
Those looking to purchase these radios to have thier own personal radio for the agency they work for can write off the purchase from thier federal and state taxes as a business expense.
I started refurbishing BK radios in 2004 after a San Francisco Bay Area firefighter was killed on a wildland fire in 2003 down in San Diego. One of the things that came out of the investigation was that the Fire Captain on the engine was the only one who had a working radio for the incident due to his agency s different operating frequencies, and the lack of available VHF radios on the incident. As a result of that incident many of California s fire agencies have mandated that every firefighter going on assignment, and as a pass-down every firefighter regularly, should have their own individual radio to insure that communications can be maintained.
I have been using these radios since their creation, and do repairs and programming for my fire agency, and have come up with a cost-effective solution for personal communications on everyday calls to major incidents. The cost of these radios will average around $120.00 each, versus the cost of $800.00 for a new Wideband radio, to $1600.00 for a new Narrowband radio. Since doing this I have provided around 200 individual and group radios to public safety members with few problems.
If you are a Wildland Fire Private Contractor your contracts with the Federal Government, and to a degree with some State Land Management Agencies, you will be required to have a Narrowband radio to communicate with adjoining forces. However, If you are running Engine or Hand Crews on the fireline these Wideband radios can still be used for Tactical Operations on fires, prescription burns, and project work.
NOTE: If you are a non-profit fire / rescue/ ems / SAR or other entity that has a need for communications and are on a very tight budget please let me know what you need and what you can afford and I'll help you with a "donation" of equipment on a one-for-one deal.
Also, if you are an agency in Northern California, Central California, or Northwestern Nevada (Reno Area) and have surplus property you no longer have a use for I can see what you have an try to work a deal for radio equipment on a partial trade.
The best thing to do is contact me directly at r_wells@chicagopartsnetwork.com with any questions you may have regarding this equipment, what you may have in the way of surplus equipment you no longer find useful, or how I could help your organization. If we can communicate over the phone I can see if we can work something out to both our advantages.
