Graph of radioactivity over independently measured 1-min intervals This rod is composed of 98% tungsten and 2% thorium. Its cylindrical shape and size is great for geiger counter experiments. It measures 7" long and approximately 1/8" in diameter. This gives a beta + gamma reading of 158 CPM on my geiger counter (my background is 24 CPM). Your geiger counter will of course vary depending on type and tube size. Gamma-only reading is 22 uR/hr on my PM1703M (12 uR/hr background). Useful for honing your geiger counter skills, practicing statistical analysis (see graph below), and adding a cool (hot!) item for your collection. They are just plain neat to hold in your hand. One strange idea which I had was to build a model nuclear reactor using these as the control rods (fool your friends)!
