Round Head Phillips Drive - Model A tractors went styled effective 477,000, B tractors effective 60,000 the start of the 1939 production year. G tractors went styled effective 13,000 the beginning of the 1942 production year. Model H tractors were all styled and this screw design was used for all. The fastener of choice as production of these tractors began was the Round Head, Phillips Drive, 5/16-18 machine screw.
Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 - Massive labor-unrest manifested itself in 1946, a year which stands to this day as a record year for lost labor hours industry wide! Quicker ways of doing things would need to be found. And to this end, Frederick W. Taylor manufacturing analysis was applied. One of the follow-on changes in the Deere factory was to change from Phillips Drive to Clutch Drive fasteners for sheet metal clutch drive screws hung on the bit better than would those with Phillips Drive. Thus, beginning with A584000, B201000, and G26000 The fasteners where Round Head, Clutch Drive. This change point coincided with what is known as the 2nd Styling. For Model A and B tractors, it was early in the 1947 production year, and for G tractors, it was in the early part of the 1948 production year.
Rebellion of Farmers - Farmers had tough enough time removing the Phillips drive screws but the Clutch drive screws were a challenge they did not like. For one thing, clutch drivers wasn t a common tool to have around, and the round head well it was round! And so, with farmers rebelling because they were unable to remove round head screws, Deere (starting with 1950 production) went to Hex Head, Clutch Drive screws. This was the factory fastener for A-B-G tractors through the end of their production runs (1952 for A & B) and 1953 for G tractors. End of Story!
