IEEE 1394, also known as "Firewire", is a versatile, high-speed, and low-cost method of interconnecting a variety of personal computer peripherals and consumer electronics devices. FireWire provides a direct digital link between up to 63 devices without the need for additional hardware, such as hubs. Digital Video (DV) camcorders, scanners, printers, videoconferencing cameras, and fixed-disk drives can all share a common bus connection not only to an optional PC, but to each other as well. Sony's new Digital Video (DV) camcorders are the forerunners of a whole new breed of video and audio systems that bridge the gap between professional and consumer electronic gear. More than 50 manufacturers of broadcast and consumer video equipment have adopted the DV format, which incorporates IEEE-1394 as the standard digital audio/video interface for all DV gear.
