The DIS 124i recorder makes it possible to store and forward data in high-speed telecommunications formats such as OC3, ATM and SONET. The DIS 124i recorder is based on the data D-2 format and is tape format compatible with the Ampex DST and DIS mass storage computer tape drives and cartridge libraries. In addition, the DIS 124i recorder is interface compatible with the Ampex DCRsi ruggedized family of recorders providing a migration path for current DCRsi users. The Ampex DIS 124i quad density recorder was developed as another member of the Ampex tape drive family to allow the capture of large amounts of digital data, in real time, and provide the ability to manage and process this data efficiently. The DIS 124i recorder brings the 19-mm, D-2 cartridge tape standard used extensively in the television, motion picture and computer mass storage industries into the instrumentation and telecommunications world. By using the DIS 124i quad density recorder in instrumentation mode, users are able to capture high speed, real time data directly into a recording device and process that data on large computer systems through the use of industry standard SCSI-2, 16-bit fast computer interfaces. Used in telecommunications applications, the DIS 124i data rate is compatible with OC3, ATM and SONET. The DIS 124i recorder is based on the highly successful Ampex DST® 314 mass storage tape drive. The DIS 124i recorder utilizes two types of built-in data I/O interfaces. The first I/O interface is a SCSI-2, 16-bit fast differential, with a sustained transfer rate approaching 20 MBytes/sec (20 MBytes/sec burst). The second I/O interface is a generic instrumentation interface consisting of one single-bit serial port and one 8-bit parallel data port. This instrumentation interface has been adapted directly from the Ampex DCRsi system in order to provide users with the simplicity and flexibility of the DCRsi I/O, a proven standard in the high environment instrumentation world. The generic interface emulates a single-bit or an 8-bit wide, sequentially accessed 100, 300 or 660 GByte deep FIFO. Data can be recorded or played at any rate from 0-120 Mbits/sec or from 0-15 MBytes/second, continuously, in bursts or when the user data rate is slewing. In addition, IRIG-B time code is accepted by the recorder and utilized to time stamp the physical data blocks (approx. 1.2 MBytes of user data) for rapid recall in playback by time code reference. Furthermore, data collected on any DCRsi recorder can be copied directly into the DIS 124i recorder and still retain the exact DCRsi time code indexes for playback. The DIS 124i is fully backwards compatible and will read data recorded on previous Ampex DIS or DST models, DIS 122i, DIS 120i, DST 310, DST 312), and also any DIS/DST Automated Library, (DIS 222i, DIS 224i, DST 412, DST 712, and DST 812).
