This is a new, custom wound tuning coil that measures 352uH that is used for tuning the AM broadcast band for crystal radios. This is the perfect inductance to use with a 365pF air variable cap, like the ones often called for in crystal radio plans. According to Dan Petersen's Professor Coyle software for determining coil inductance and resonant frequencies of various inductance and capacitance values, 352uH and 365pF resonate at 440kHz, which is just under the lower limit of the AM broadcast band of 530kHz. When 352uH is combined with 20pF, it resonates at 1900kHz, which is just above the upper limit of the AM broadcast band of 1700kHz. Obviously, by using this coil with a 365pF air variable capacitor, your crystal radio will easily tune the entire AM broadcast band. The dimensions of the coil are: Length of core: approximately 3.5" (90mm) Length of coil: 2.3125" (58.74mm) Inductance: approximately 352uH The coil is wound with 24AWG magnet wire on our new custom coil winding machine on a black ABS plastic core. It has 108 turns of 24AWG magnet and the inductance measures 352uH. Our new custom winding machine maintains constant tension on the wire as it is wound and creates a superior winding that is very smooth with no slack areas, gaps, or overlapped windings. It also prevents the windings from loosening with age. Also, because of this, if you want to remove the insulation from part of the coil, like you do when using the coil for tuning, you can do so with confidence that you will not disturb the windings or cause them to loosen. The magnet wire is firmly connected to the core at both ends where it is terminated through two small holes in the PVC and both the ends of the winding are anchored with glue. The ends of the wire are loosely stored inside of the coil and they are more than 6" long. Of course, if you should need more wire at the ends, we can provide almost any length of wire you want. All you have to do is ask! You can't find finer coils than these. If you have special needs, like more or less turns of wire with a different amount of inductance or tuning for shortwave radio, please contact us and let us wind your coil exactly the way you want it! We normally use either black ABS pipe or white PVC for our cores but we can arrange to use almost any core material you would like in any dimensions you like. We even have some cardboard grits boxes, a Quaker Oats box, and you can even send us your Quaker Oats box or other core and we will wind your coil on that for you!
