This early CAT THIRTY is pulling a ‘train’ of three (3) BAKER-MANEY SCRAPERS working on a bridge approach. The Thirty has the early manifold and air cleaner positions. I believe the BAKER-MANEY scrapers were each about 1-1/2 cubic yards in capacity. A ‘train’ of multiple scrapers would be operated by two men, one operating the crawler, the second operating multiple scrapers. The scraper operator would load one scraper, then jump off one and onto another to load it, and then on to the next. At the fill, the scrapers would be dumped in a similar manner, one operator jumping from scraper to scraper. Not only did the scraper operator need to be nibble on his feet, he had to have a fair amount of arm muscle as all levers were strictly mechanical ... no hydraulic assist here yet. In this photo the scraper operator has just dumped the rear scraper.
The BEST MODEL THIRTY was introduced in 1921, replacing its predecessor the Best 25, and was meant to compete with the HOLT 5 TON. When Best and Holt merged in 1925, the Holt trade-name of “CATERPILLAR” became the name of the new company. The old Best color scheme of black with gold trim gave way to the new Caterpillar gray and red paint, and then in 1931 it was changed to Highway Yellow. The Thirty was available with a number of options such as: full canopy, cold weather enclosures, lights, belt-pulley and PTO drive units, and rear seat or tail orchard seat. The Cat Thirty was discontinued around 1932, but reintroduced in 1937 as the 6G Series Thirty, although the 6G Thirty had little in common with the earlier Thirty.
Reverse side of this print contains a photo of another CAT THIRTY Tractor, equipped with a rear PTO for operating the unusual grader. This Thirty has an early manifold and air cleaner style, and a Holt style bucket seat ... so could be a HOLT THIRTY?
This is a print carefully removed from a book on vintage crawlers, not a copy, printed on good quality paper. The image is clear, showing a good deal of detail, as a print in a good quality book should be. All edges are good, no rips, no marks, no mildew. This print is in mint, like new condition.
